Still in service today in many Armies, after 69 years ! (Mk 1 issued in Sweden in 1948)


Introduced in 1937, this weapon performed in WW2 & many other conflicts. Post war, the two-inch mortar was kept in service to fire smoke and illuminating rounds. It remained in service until the late 1980s when it was replaced by the L9A1 51 mm light mortar. A total of 53 years in service.  Mk 1 to Mk VIII. It is still produced today under Licence in India.

(The "bat" was still taught this weapon on continuation-training in 1964 !)

(I remember firing the last of the "Mess Webley" ammo in Malta in 1964,

(.45 & .38 in cartridge)

The Riot Guns - 1960`` s/70`` s & 80` s - firing CS Gas & Rubber Bullets for crowd control.
